This four-movement work was written in the summer of 1919 when the composer was 62 years old - shortly after the end of World War I. It premiered in October of the same year under Elgar's own direction, with Felix Salmond as soloist and the London Symphony Orchestra. The renowned performance by female cellist Jacqueline du Pré (1945-1987) is widely known, and it stands alongside Dvořák's Cello Concerto as one of the most popular cello concertos.
