This single-movement cello concerto consists of three parts played without interruption. Written in 1872, during a period when the composer was producing numerous masterpieces, it premiered in January 1873 at the Paris Conservatoire with Auguste Torbeck as the cellist. It is one of the most important pieces in the cellist's repertoire, almost always included as a required piece in music school entrance exams and competitions. This recording includes insightful bowing and fingering instructions by Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, one of Japan's leading cellists.
