Yamaha YSL-456A Bb/F Tenor Trombone — Australian Exclusive
The YSL-456A holds a genuinely unique place in the Yamaha trombone range: it’s the only Yamaha trombone built exclusively for the Australian market, originally developed in collaboration with James Morrison to meet the specific needs of Australian players, school programs and the country’s distinctive brass band and jazz traditions. The result is a step-up trombone that carries professional-grade features into a price point accessible to advancing students and serious amateurs.
Every YSL-456A is made at Yamaha’s Toyooka factory in Japan — the same facility that produces Yamaha’s professional and Custom series instruments. While the 456A sits below the Custom tier, it benefits from the quality control, hand-finishing expertise and materials sourcing that have made Toyooka-built Yamahas the global standard for intermediate and professional brass.
The 204.4mm (8”) two-piece gold brass bell is the heart of the instrument. Gold brass has a higher copper content than standard yellow brass, producing a warmer, more resonant tone with greater tonal depth than student-level bells — suited equally to concert band, orchestral and big band work. The .525” medium-large bore gives the player meaningful projection and dynamic range without demanding the air capacity of a full professional bore, making it a sensible next instrument for a Year 9–12 student stepping up from a YSL-154 or similar. The professional-grade slide delivers the fast, even action that’s essential as technical demands increase, and the traditional closed-wrap F-attachment offers the balanced resistance and stable intonation preferred by many concert band and orchestral players.
For Australian players, the 456A is often the trombone that takes them from high school concert band through early tertiary study — an instrument they’ll still be playing confidently five or ten years after purchase.
Supplied with an ABS moulded hardshell case with shoulder strap, Yamaha mouthpiece and care accessories.
